Install, Build and Secure Router At Home With Ubuntu

Many homes now have Internet access independent. Some of them even had to use a broadband connection with a fairly high speed. The question is, Can the Internet connection is shared to multiple PCs or notebooks at home? The answer could be, with the router!

PPC With Bidvertiser

Bidvertiser is a PPC network that has been around for a few years. In my round of testing out many PPC networks for Dollars Blog, bidvertiser was my last of the “major” ones I have tried. I have actually been pleasantly surprised for a few reasons.

Three things I really like about bidvertiser compared to most other ad networks out there:

1) Many ad size and type choices. They even have those real small text ads, that I haven’t found on other networks, except for Adsense. This helps improve CTR rate because you can help it really blend into your content.

2) Convenience. You can get paid by paypal(only 10 dollar minimum) or check. You can start earning money immediately after registration. No social security or tax information has to be submitted before you are paid.

3) Control. Beyond the generic “network” ads, you can decline specific bidded ads from being displayed on your site, if you choose. Now in Google adsense you can ad sites to a competitive ad filter to “block them”, but they only allow you up to 200 in the list, and it can be a pain checking ads and blocking them. I think stopping them before they are displayed, is a easier more effective way to eliminate untargeted or offensive ads.

What makes bidvertiser unique from others, is that it’s not contextual, but allows bidding for a PPC ad on your site. When you first set it up your account, you get generic ads based on the category you picked to describe your website’s topic. Over time(at least in theory), advertisers will start bidding on your site and you should get more earnings per click.

One thing to keep in mind is that, getting 3rd party sites bidding on your site, may effect your click rate. You may wind up with higher bids, but they may not be too relevant. However, you get to decline these 3rd party bids too. The moral of the story is, only approve ads relevant to your site, regardless of the bid they offer. For example, don’t approve mesothelioma ads for your site, if it talks about pregnancy clothes, just because it has a $1.00 bid. No one going to your site on pregnancy clothes is going to click on a mesothelioma ad!

Don’t expect nice payout rates per click like you would get with Yahoo publisher network or Adsense. All these “2nd tier PPC advertisers” pay less per click anyways because of less competition. Bidvertiser also has a nice referral program. When you display bidvertiser ads, there is a automatic referral link on the borders of each banner ad. It could be a great way to earn secondary income through bidvertiser.

Editor's review of Safari

Apple has published a Windows version of their native browser. No, the sky has not fallen and we have yet to see the spontaneous evolution of avian bacon.

What we do have is a major software publisher porting their once mono-platform browser with strong results. Much like iTunes, the Windows version of the Mac application works fine but lacks a certain tightness. It feels unfinished because it is.

Safari lacks most customization features. Skins and other aesthetic options exist in the Mac version, but not here. Hopefully that feature will come later. Just about the only thing you can alter is the font. Toolbar icons can be swapped, but the Customize option is only accessible from the Menu bar. If you like right-clicking your way to a shapelier browser, Safari's going to make you feel fat and ugly.

Safari does load pages quickly and didn't have any problems rendering Flash, although it crashed several times on Vista while processing Java. It's a memory sink, too, sometimes using three times as much RAM as Firefox when more than a couple tabs were opened. Tab sessions are savable--well, they would be savable, if the Reopen All Windows option under History worked. The built-in Roboform is buggy, and although there are plenty of extensions for the Mac Safari, that functionality hasn't been ported over.

Having a Safari engine to work with is a great boon for developers. For the average user, though, we'd recommend taking your browser hunt to more familiar grounds.

AdBrite - Internet Marketting

AdBrite, dubbed “the Internet’s ad marketplace,” has allowed advertisers to target keywords and choose specific sites to advertise on since inception. The network changed from a simple marketplace to a much more powerful one when AdBrite 2.0 was launched in November of 2006.

This latest version of the site gives advertisers a number of ways to setup a highly targeted ad campaign. Adbrite determines demographic data for visitors to network publishers via a cookie and reverse IP lookup. They grab U.S. census data based on the zip code of the visitor, which gives them data on ethnicity and income level. Adbrite also looks at Comscore data for each site that user visits, which gives them reasonably good age and gender data. Once a user visits enough sites, Adbrite has a very good idea of the age, gender, ethnicity and income level of that particular user. Advertisers can then choose to target their ads to certain users.
In addition to text and banner ads Adbrite offers a few other interesting ad formats. Interstitial ads are full page ads that take over an entire page when a visitor first comes to a website. Another ad format is the Inline ad, which pops up over page content when a highlighted keyword is rolled over.
InVideo is AdBrite’s intriguing video ad format. This embeddable video player (similar to YouTube), allows video publishers to insert their logo (as a watermark) and AdBrite ads into any video. Anyone who takes the content and embeds it on their own site will show the same video, with the same ads and watermark. All click backs on the video go to the original site.
Lastly, in March of 2007 AdBrite launched BritePic. They describe BritePic as “the IMG tag on steroids.” By changing the embed code, web publishers can add a caption, watermark, zoom, share, resize and an advertisement, if they choose to.
AdBrite, "The Internet's Ad Marketplace", is an e-commerce site. Rather than selling books, CDs, or rare antiques, we sell ad space on thousands of websites.

Like Ebay, many AdBrite users are both buyers and sellers (advertisers and publishers). That's why our homepage doesn't say "advertisers go here" and "publishers go there". There are, however, two distinct things you can do with AdBrite -- buy and sell ad space -- so we'll address them separately here.

If you're an advertiser, AdBrite provides great deals from all sorts of websites. Search or browse to find a site you want to advertise on. We'll show you relevant stats, including price and how many clicks you can expect. Add it to your cart, write your ad, and pay. If approved by the webmaster, your ad will appear on that site at the scheduled time.

If you're a publisher, use AdBrite to set your own ad rates, and approve or reject every ad that's purchased for your site. AdBrite enables you to instantly sell ads to your visitors via a "Your Ad Here" link, in addition to selling through AdBrite's marketplace and sales team.

Our revenue split is 75/25 in your favor. Through a small snippet of HTML placed on your site, we handle serving, scheduling, billing, customer service, and sales. About half of AdBrite's sales are generated from our marketplace and sales team, while the other half are generated from users clicking "Your Ad Here" on our publisher's sites.

While AdBrite can provide publishers with more revenue and better ads than traditional ad networks such as Google AdSense, we work fine along-side them as a simple way to generate additional ad revenue by selling ads directly to your visitors -- something the other ad systems don't do.

If you're using AdBrite in addition to another ad network, you can turn off AdBrite's "run-of-network ads" and AdBrite will only display ads that have been approved by you. If you have no ads running, AdBrite will display nothing but "Your Ad Here", so no real estate is wasted and you have nothing to lose.

AdBrite doesn't display the big "brick" of ads that you're used to. Rather, AdBrite gives publishers full control over the look and feel of their ads so AdBrite can be integrated seamlessly into any website.

Capture NX 2 takes aim at Adobe

There are a lot of image editors out there, but few of them are designed with professional photographers in mind, and even fewer are designed by photographers themselves. Capture NX 2 for Windows and Mac is one of those rare editors designed by professionals but is easy enough for hobbyists to use, and Nikon has just given it a major overhaul.

Available for purchase at $179.95 or upgrade at $109.95, the program introduces a revamped interface, closer integration with other Nikon programs such as View NX, and a battery of new tools that simplify and enhance the photo-editing work flow. This should make any photographer seriously consider making the jump for nearly every kind of edit.

Although Capture NX's improvements on the photographer's work flow are undeniably helpful, the most unique new tool in the program are Control Points. Based on proprietary Nikon technology called U Point, the control points allow the user to make selective changes instead of global ones. From sharpening to color changes, the points can affect image-wide edits, but their true power lies in the ability to narrow tweaks to a user-defined space.

There are several control point-based tools. The Black, Neutral, and White Control Point tools, which look like eyedroppers in front of circles on the toolbar, are used to manage color. By clicking on one and then clicking on the image, a small circle appears with sliders extending from it. Moving the sliders adjusts both the desired effect and the diameter of the circle that radiates from the control point. If you don't like the positioning of a point, but are happy with the effect, click and drag the point to a different location on the image.

The Selection Control Points eliminate the need for editors to manually mask off the part of the image they want to change. They function the same way as the color control points, except that they can be used to sharpen, reduce noise, adjust contrast, saturation, and more. Once a point has been created, the control panel that natively lives on the right of the editing window can be used to select the desired effect.

Another excellent new tool is the Auto-Retouch brush, which does exactly what its name implies. What's impressive about this version of the popular tool, found in many programs, is that it can accomplish with one click what other programs take four or five. This may not sound like much initially, but when repeatedly removing dust or skin blemishes the saved time is noticeable.

Other improvements to the program include common hot keys and further compatibility with Nikon's View NX software, making batch edits and creating common settings a cinch. The Quick Fix menu also cuts out repetition by offering up a selection of standard changes ranging from curves to lens correction. The Quick Fix wouldn't be as useful as it is if it were inaccurate, but clearly a lot of work has gone into making the algorithms controlling the tool flexible and effective. The Soft Proof tool that lives at the bottom of the open image window makes accurate printing pain-free.

One of the subtle improvements of the program is the manner by which layers have been worked in. Called Steps here, they are woven seamlessly in the work flow, making control of previous changes as simple as unchecking a box. Most of the changes are made via sliders, controllable both from the image and from the Edit List, which is where the Adjustment Window lives.

However, the layout of the various components is malleable--users can hide, minimize, and drag windows around at will with no delay in processing time. This happens, in part, because Capture NX 2 is much smaller than Photoshop, which needs to appeal to designers as well as photographers. One drawback of Capture NX is that it's not capable of creating an image montage easily. However, since those are rarely high resolution images because they're made up of many smaller photos, it's not a glaring oversight.

Capture NX supports TIFF-16, TIFF-8, JPG, and Nikon's own proprietary NEF format. It does not support Canon's CR2 or other RAW configurations, which should decrease the appeal of the program to non-Nikon photographers. Images can be saved as TIFF, NEF, or JPG, metatag information can be kept or destroyed as the user sees fit, and changes saved to a NEF can be easily undone by unchecking the changes from the Edit List.

Overall, as a lifelong Photoshop user for my personal photo editing and printing needs, Capture NX 2 is nothing less than spectacular and should be considered by any photographer looking to enhance their work flow by cutting out tools that they never touch and emphasizing the ones they always need.

UPDATED: The relationship between Nikon, Inc., and Nik Software has been corrected. Although the Japanese division of Nikon does have an equity stake in Nik Software, Nik is an independent company. View NX and Capture NX are owned and published by Nikon, Inc. Also, Capture NX 2 and View NX do not support non-Nikon RAW formats, as previously reported.

Featured Freeware: CCleaner

Although it lacks a few of the bells and whistles found in other PC-cleaning applications, this free program offers more than enough features to make it a worthy download. CCleaner's interface is logically designed and makes it easy to wipe away your tracks from Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Opera, from various Windows system areas, and from some third-party applications.

CCleaner doesn't support the large number of extraneous programs that some competitors do, but it can erase traces from such popular programs as Spybot - Search & Destroy and WinZip. CCleaner now offers secure file erasing along with a Registry-cleaning utility that quickly scans for invalid entries before removing them. CCleaner can even back up your Registry before removal, in case it accidentally removes a crucial component, and the download includes a rudimentary feature for uninstalling any program on your machine.

Yahoo Messenger goes big with new beta

On Friday, Yahoo released a new 9.0 beta version of the popular Yahoo Messenger chat client. The company may not have changed the version number at all, but it did add a boatload of new features and changes for those of us who like to play with software on the edge.

The most obvious change in the new release is an additional status message at the top of Messenger. Along with the conventional "Available," "Busy," and the like, there's now an additional line for Facebook-style status updates, such as "Surfing YouTube for Andy Rooney Game videos."

The other big change is larger emoticons. Since the Yahoo emoticons are likely the only reason I actually use Messenger instead of multiservice clients like Trillian, Pidgin, or Digsby, I was very curious to see what these new emoticons looked like...and to learn if there are there any new ones!

The six newest emoticons express some necessary visual statements, but they only work with other Yahoo Messenger 9 beta users.

There are certainly six new ones--don't want to see (X_X); hurry up (:!!); rock on (\m/); thumbs up (:-bd); thumbs down (:-q); and my personal fave, it wasn't me (^#(^). The size change is barely noticeable, but the new ones are fun. I can only assume that there are more secret emoticons to discover, as well.

The coolest addition in this latest beta release is a new "Compact List" view for the main contacts display. The default view uses bigger avatar images and created a lot of scrolling for me, which I hate. The Compact List view now lets me view all of my online contacts, with virtually no scrolling at all.

Unfortunately, the install process for Yahoo Messenger beta is loaded with some sketchy behavior, such as forcing users to opt out of browser home page and default search-engine changes. It also hides the opt-out selection for the Yahoo Toolbar behind a "Custom Install" link. Users who run the standard install process will soon find Yahoo in their browsers, with no foreknowledge. Boo!

C'mon, Yahoo. That's bush-league installation behavior. Such good products deserve better treatment. All of those facets of the Yahoo service should be opt-in. I think you'd agree?
